- 1In the snowy town-hall square, Hugo stood. "Lantern glow, Christmas go!"
- 2Snow covered Santa's sleigh on the roof. Lantern in hand, Hugo searched. The snowy ladder!
- 3Up the snowy ladder went Hugo, tummy fluttering. Nearly there? At last, boots touched the roof.
- 4The runners lay buried. Hugo dug with both hands, while the reindeer shivered nearby.
- 5Snow packed around both hands. "Lantern glow, runners go!" rang out.
- 6The runners peeked out. A carrot basket waited beside the reindeer.
- 7The reindeer shivered harder. Hugo offered carrots, one by one, and waited beside them.
- 8The reindeer stamped, then pulled. Whoosh went Santa's sleigh, carrots bouncing, lantern dancing, Hugo laughing.
- 9The sleigh bumped over a snowy ridge. Everyone landed in a soft heap.
- 10Hugo helped the reindeer up, then lifted the lantern. "Follow this light," said Hugo.
- 11Down the lantern-lit street they travelled. The sleigh rose above the roofs, and the first star appeared.
