Softcover, Hardcover, or Just the Digital Book?

The short answer

  • Every version includes the full digital book and a downloadable PDF — the print choice is about the physical object, not the story.
  • Softcover from $47 and hardcover $69, both 8.5 × 8.5 inch square, printed and shipped to your door.
  • The hardcover also includes the narrated audio story AND the song made from the book; on any other version audio is $7.99.
  • You review and confirm the finished book before anything is printed — nothing goes to press unseen.

Once the book exists, there are three ways to keep it, and the difference between them is smaller than people expect. The story, the pictures and the digital copy are the same in all three. What you are actually choosing is the physical object.

What every version includes#

Whichever you pick, you get:

  • the complete digital book — cover, dedication and every illustrated spread, readable online
  • a downloadable PDF of the full-spread book
  • it stays in your library; it does not expire and it is not a rental

That last point matters more than it sounds. A lot of people buy the digital book, live with it for a while, and print it months later for a birthday. That is a perfectly good way to do this.

Softcover — from $47#

A perfect-bound, 8.5 × 8.5 inch square picture book, professionally printed and shipped to your door. It is the same size and the same interior as the hardcover.

This is the right choice if:

  • it is going in a nursery where books get chewed, dropped and carried outside
  • you want more than one copy — one for their house, one for a grandparent
  • the digital book was already the main event and the print is a bonus

Hardcover — $69#

Case-bound on heavier stock — the version that gets kept on a shelf rather than in a toy box. It also bundles the two audio versions of the book: the narrated audio story and the song made from the book's own words. (On any other version, audio is $7.99.)

This is the right choice if:

  • it is a keepsake — a first birthday, a new sibling, a book from a grandparent
  • you want the audio anyway, in which case the maths gets friendly quickly
  • it is a gift and the object itself is part of the gift

Digital only#

You do not have to print anything. The full book plus the PDF is a complete thing on its own, and for a family that reads on a tablet at bedtime it may genuinely be the better format — it cannot be lost, and it is on every device.

The honest trade-offs of print-on-demand#

Worth saying plainly, because "printed book" covers a very wide range of objects.

  • It is print-on-demand. That is why one copy of one book is possible at this price and arrives in days rather than weeks. It is a good, professionally printed book — it is not a hand-finished small-press object with foil and a slipcase, and it is not priced like one.
  • Shipping is separate, calculated at checkout, and you see a delivery estimate for your address before you pay rather than after.
  • Colour on paper is not colour on a screen. Print is slightly softer and slightly warmer than a backlit display. This is true of every printed photo book ever made, and it still catches people out.
  • The print edition is laid out for print. The digital book reads as wide two-page spreads; a physical book has to be split into square pages, so the framing shifts a little. The story and the art are identical.

Nothing goes to press unseen#

The rule we care most about here: you review and confirm the finished book before it prints. Not a mock-up, not the first two pages — the whole thing, exactly as it will be printed. If something is wrong, that is the moment to say so, and it costs nothing to fix it before the press runs.

The short recommendation#

  • Testing whether this is for you? Make the book. Building the story and seeing your child's painted cover is free — decide about print afterwards.
  • A gift with a date on it? Hardcover, ordered a week or two ahead.
  • A book for daily use in a house with small children? Softcover, possibly two.

Start with a photo and decide at the end, or look at the pricing page for the full breakdown first.

Questions people ask about this

What is the difference between the softcover and hardcover book?
Both are the same 8.5 × 8.5 inch square book with the same story and pictures. The hardcover is a case-bound edition on heavier stock and includes the narrated audio story and the song; the softcover is perfect-bound and starts at $47 against the hardcover's $69.
What size is the printed book?
8.5 × 8.5 inches — a square picture book. It is professionally printed on demand and shipped to your door, with a delivery estimate shown before you pay.
Do I have to buy a printed copy?
No. The digital book is included with every purchase and is readable online and downloadable as a PDF. Plenty of families keep only that, and print later — the book does not expire.
