The honest thing about a newborn present is that the baby will not know it happened. A personalized newborn book works anyway, for two reasons: the parents can see it now, and the child grows into it — a book about the week they were born is a very good book to be read at two.
Here is what to put in it when there is no story yet, who to draw around the baby, and a complete real book written for the age a newborn grows into.
What is a personalized newborn book?#
A picture book in which the baby is painted as the hero — from one photo, once there is a face to paint — with the people around them drawn in from photos too, and a story written from a few sentences about the first weeks.
It is different from a baby record book (the one with blanks for weight and first tooth), and different from a name-in-the-story book. Those are fine; this is a story, with the family in it, that gets read aloud.
Reading aloud from the first weeks is not sentiment. The American Academy of Pediatrics' 2024 policy statement on literacy promotion recommends that pediatricians encourage every family to read with their children from infancy. Reading Rockets' reading tips for parents of babies add the practical half: "a baby will do with a book what he does with everything else — put it in his mouth". So the newborn book is the one the parents read now, and the sturdy one the baby handles comes later.
| Gift | What it is for | When it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Baby record book | Filling in facts | The first year, then a drawer |
| Name-in-the-story book | A word swapped into a template | Ages 2–4 |
| Personalized newborn book | The family's own first weeks, painted | Now, for the parents; from two, for the child; the shelf, for a decade |
What do I write when the baby has no story?#
The first weeks are the story. Parents underrate this because they are inside it. Two lines is enough:
| Weak note | Strong note |
|---|---|
| "We love our new baby" | "She only sleeps if her dad hums the same four notes, and he does not know what song they are from" |
| "Big brother is so proud" | "Theo brought his own blanket to the hospital and put it on her, then took it back" |
| "Welcome to the world" | "She came home in a hat that was too big and wore it for a week" |
| "Grandma came to help" | "Grandma stayed nine days and every night she said 'just one more night'" |
The right column is what the illustrator paints and what the child, at four, will ask you about. If you want the general principle, what makes a good children's story explains why the small specific thing always beats the big general one.
Who should be in the pictures?#
Make the baby the hero and draw the family around them. Up to three companions can join, each from a photo, each drawn the same way on every page:
- A parent — the one humming the four notes.
- An older sibling — this is the most powerful version. A book about the new baby with the big brother or sister in it does something a book about the baby alone cannot: it gives the older child a role. A personalized big brother book is the sibling-first version of the same idea.
- A grandparent, or the dog — whoever was actually there.
Here is a complete book written for the age a newborn book grows into. Peek-a-Boo, Little Cloud! is a finished story in our shop for ages 0–3 — big shapes, big words, one giggle on every page, and at the end it is the little one who hides. The sample below stars Remi, who is two; a parent adds their own child's photo and name, and every page is painted with that child instead.

How the story begins
- 1This is Little Cloud. Little Cloud loves PEEK-A-BOO.
- 2Where's Little Cloud? Is it behind the SUN?
- 3PEEK-A-BOO! There you are!
The rest of the story is in Peek-a-Boo, Little Cloud!.
The words to the song
[Verse 1] Where's Little Cloud? Is it behind the sun? Peek-a-boo! There you are, little one! Where's Little Cloud? In the bubbles, maybe? Peek-a-boo! There you are, my baby! [Verse 2] Where's Little Cloud? With the sheep so white? Peek-a-boo! There you are — what a sight! Where's Little Cloud? In the pillows, hiding? Peek-a-boo! There you are — no more hiding! [Verse 3] Now where's REMI? Under the blanket, I see... Peek-a-boo! There you are, right here with me! [Outro] Little Cloud is sleepy, Little Cloud is soft, Little Cloud's a pillow now — the moon is up aloft. Goodnight, Little Cloud. Goodnight, Remi, too. Close your eyes... and tomorrow — peek-a-boo!
It is the kind of book a baby shower guest can give with confidence, because it needs nothing but a photo and a name, and it is the first game a baby learns to play back: "Where's Little Cloud?" — "PEEK-A-BOO! There you are!" If you would rather write the family's own first weeks into the story, with the big sister or the grandparents on the page, that is what the steps below are for. When the baby is old enough to be sung to at bedtime, books like Guess How Much I Love You is the shelf that sits beside it.
What if I am buying it for a baby shower?#
Give the book as a gift the parents make, not one you make for them — because the book needs a photo of the baby's face, and at a shower there isn't one yet.
The way that works: a card with the plan ("a picture book of your first weeks, with all of you in it — make it together in the first month"), and then, once the baby is home, either you make it with them or they make it themselves in about twenty minutes. The cover appears before anyone pays, so it is easy to give the choice.
If you would rather hand over a finished object on the day, a personalized book for a first birthday is the same idea a year later, when there is a face and a story.
How is it made?#
On KindFable:
- The baby's name and age — write the age in months; the text is written to it.
- One photo of the baby's face — daylight, roughly at the camera. Newborn photos are often eyes-closed and that is fine. The photo becomes a painted character and is never stored.
- Companions — a photo each for the family; a sentence each for anyone imaginary.
- The story box — the two lines from the table above.
- An art style — nine looks. Soft watercolour and classic storybook suit newborn books; warm 3D reads well when an older sibling is the co-star.
- The cover appears, free. softcover or hardcover — current prices are on the pricing page, and the hardcover ships free. Digital book and a song from the story with both; the hardcover adds a narrated audiobook.
The dedication page at the front is where the birth date, the weight and the "welcome, little one" go — in your words.
Softcover or hardcover for a newborn?#
Hardcover. This is a keepsake first and a read-aloud second, and it will be handled by a toddler in eighteen months. It also comes with the narrated audiobook, which — with a newborn in the house — is the version that gets used at 3 a.m. Read hardcover, softcover or digital for the full comparison, and a personalized audiobook for kids for what the narration adds.
Frequently asked questions#
-
Is a picture book too old for a newborn? The book is for the parents now and the child later. From about eighteen months the pictures land; from two, the fact that it is them lands. Every picture book is read to a child first — that is what a picture book is.
-
Can grandparents make one for a grandchild they live far from? Yes — the parents send one photo, the grandparents write the note and make the book, and the printed copy goes to the child's house. A personalized book from grandparents walks through it.
-
Can I add the second child to the same book later? Make a new book — the first is a keepsake of a moment. An extra copy of any book you own is half price, so the grandparents' shelf and yours can both have one.
-
What about privacy for a newborn's photo? The photo is used to paint the character and then deleted. It is never stored, and nothing is ever recognised or matched. The plain-English version is on the privacy page.
Two lines about the first week is all it takes. Start with the photo and see the cover before you decide anything.
